The Porto Debacle

It really isn’t fair to name this the “Porto” debacle as Porto had nothing to do with it..… But everyone loves a catchy name so I am sticking to it.

In Porto we dealt with a double whammy of challenges. Illness and a lost bag. Both sucked. Both together actually didn’t suck as bad (says the person who didn’t go without most of their possessions for 3 days)…. We were already feeling under the weather when we left Paris and then had to deal with the fact that Ry’s checked bag never made it on the plane in Paris…it was a perfect storm of ick.

What being sick meant was that we were actually not going to get out and do the exploring we wanted to. The good news was we hadn’t actually planned much in the first place so there were no hopes to be let down or plans to cancel. This also meant that the fact Ry only had one pair of clothes didn’t matter as much because we weren’t actually going anywhere anyways.

So we did what we do, hunkered down and waited both out.

What really paid off in this scenario was the location of our accommodations.

  • Our location was perfect to allow for some very short outings that still provided some amazing views with minimal effort, since there was minimal effort to give.

  • There was a grocery store on the ground floor of the apartment and a fantastic bakery 100 meters away. Day 1 we stocked up and had all we needed for the week to cook and relied on the bakery for daily breakfast.

Sometimes you spend more to have a better location, sometimes you spend more to have better amenities, sometimes you get the best of all worlds without having to spend more at all! That was the magic of Porto.

All and all, despite the challenges, even with the limited time we spent actually enjoying the city, we could see the magic of Porto and had an enjoyable time. We will definitely be back.
